Last week I had the pleasure of attending and speaking at Virginia Assisted Living Annual Conference and Tradeshow! My keynote was on Culture Shock and wow was I surprised by the feedback of attendees after this session. While the words “corporate” and “culture” typically go hand in hand, I was amazed by the number of Executive Directors and Regional operators who shared that in their organizations- culture is virtually non-existent. At least three attendees said, “If only our corporate staff were here,” because in truth people crave culture; they want to be part of something bigger than themselves.
If I were to ask your employees to use one word to describe your corporate culture, what would they say? Would I get a litany of answers or would one or two keywords stand out? Does the thought someone asking your staff this question or more importantly, the responses it may elicit concern you? If the answer is yes then you have some work to do. If you’re the leader of an organization, take some time this week to work ON your business. Ponder the type of culture you wish to create, the impact that culture will have on employees, residents, families and the community at large.
While a demanding task, reinventing your culture could spark a business revival!
